[Too smart for its own good...]

One complaint when it came to using Microsoft Office was that very often, it's too smart for its own good. The people at Microsoft tried to guess what you want to do, usually with disastrous results. Or sometimes, they think that there's only one way to get things done.

My biggest bugbear with Word 2003 is that they only allow you to start page numbers on either pages 1 or 2. You can begin page numbers on pages 3 and beyond, but that would require the use of section breaks which no sane person can figure out. Not to mention screwing up your formatting in the process.

Another thing I hate about Word 2003 is the spell-check. It sucks. Seriously sucks. Google Toolbar's spell-check is a hundred times better. And why does Word keep insisting that the language I'm using is French?

I was doing a summary for one of my modules, covering the major topics that has been covered (so it's easier for me to find the information during my mid-term) when Word threw a new piece of WTF at me.

Read it and weep. "What will you be expected to do" is wrong. Word thinks it should be "what will you are expected to do".

I don't know if this feature has improved in the newer versions, but I think they should just trash this feature. Not at all useful to begin with. And if we all follow it, everything we write will sound the same.

[I want a new toy...]

I came into some money recently, and as always, started thinking of ways to spend it.

I'm thinking of getting a new phone. I need one that can do it all - the usual phone functions, together with MP3 player features, as well as a big enough screen and can play full-screen videos at an acceptable quality. And it would be a plus if it could take a SDHC memory card.

And I really really want it to be a clam-shell. After switching my Nokia 6131 clam-shell for my sister's 6288, I realise I really miss the design. The functions were basically the same.

So HTC's Touch is basically out, even though it could do all of the things I've mentioned and was really cheap for a WM6 device. Another reason I didn't want it is that I would have to re-learn how to use it all over again, seeing how I've only used Nokia phones and Touch is running on Windows Mobile.

Currently, the only clam-shell in the market by Nokia is the N76, the Motorola clone. It's a Series 60 phone, so most likely it would be powerful enough to play videos (my 6288 now sometimes hangs while playing long videos). But I don't like the design of the N76.

I guess all I can do now is wait for something I fancy to come along.

[What's that again?]

Keith sent me this picture he took of a hawker's signboard.

They're selling bumkin soup and basied duck. Bumkin. Hahaha! In any case, I don't think 老黄瓜 is pumpkin.

[I tell teacher you bully me...]

I've seen a lot of moronic behaviour in my (almost) three years at NUS. Let us not forget, it's a University and people there are supposed to be smart and don't have their head stuck up their asses.

In fact, I had a conference with one of my lecturers this past Friday. It was a compulsory thing to discuss an assignment, but I really didn't have a lot to ask him and his comments were pretty clear. So when he asked his customary "how was your project group?" question (he assigned the groups randomly, so if there were any problems, the onus was on him to come in and fix it), I had a bit of a banter with him. He expressed concern and wonderment that University students can still behave like kids, not doing work, not handing up work, and basically not giving a crap about their studies. How did they end up here in the first place?

But I digress. What I really wanted to talk about is that after spending (almost) three years, I thought I've seen it all, with regards to silly/stupid/childish/moronic behaviours of University students. But what I just came across took the cake:

You might need to click on it to see it clearly. The part in quotes was posted by another person. The last sentence was the guy's response.

What are you...8?

[How much did your education cost?]

My school bill for this semester just got finalised today. I did my sums, and the three years I spent in NUS cost me S$21,165.

That's one third the price of a decent car, and probably almost the full price of a made-in-China-people-will-laugh-at-you-if-you-drive-one car.

[Me first me first me first!]

I was at the bus-stop outside Clementi Fairprice waiting for a bus today when something happened that annoyed me to no end.

This woman above did something that was rather retarded. The bus stopped with its doors right in front of me. As the door opened and I was about to step off the pavement onto the bus, this woman came in from the right, in-between the bus and the kerb, and cut in front of me. If this has happened to you before, you'd know how awkward it was for me. And you'd also know how hard (and thick-skinned) it was to pull it off since the gap between the bus and the kerb was small.

No big deal, but what's her problem? I mean, what she did wasn't nice. Would being the second person to board the bus kill you?

I rate this just as bad as people who arrive at a lift landing with people already waiting for a lift and then proceed to jab the lift button furiously. Don't you think that the people already waiting have already pressed the button? Or what, are we just standing around looking at the nice LED lights?

Was in school late today. Took some photos from the 8th floor of SOC1.

At the end of last semester, an email was sent out letting us know that we could collect a free faculty T-shirt from the Computing Club office. It was free, the school paid for it and everyone's entitled to one.

They didn't have a suitable size for me then, so I did not collect mine. I was told that the first order was rushed, meant for the graduating students who weren't going to be around next semester, hence there were less sizes.

I walked passed the Computing Club office today. Different people are running it now. The sign outside was advertising for committee members, free faculty T-shirts and something else which I cannot remember (not important).

I went back with a few friends and tried to collect our shirts, but as it turns out, you can no longer collect the T-shirts now...Unless you sign up to be in one of their committees.

What a load of bullshit. It was meant for ALL Computing students in the first place, and now you're saying it's only for people who would sign up to be in your committee? Seriously, you need a better incentive than that. I have a lot more to say about this, but I probably shouldn't because it's coming from a "dark" place (you either get it, or you don't).

The President of the Science Club is a moron needs to grow up.

By the way, no one gives a shit what you did when you were in NS.

[AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Low-ki in WWE?]

Not sure if I've posted the AJ Styles match before...But Keith pointed me to the Samoa Joe match and I saw the Low-ki match as well.

They've come a long way. And this proves WWE doesn't know talent even if it came and bit them on their ass.

[Breakfast flavoured...]

I've seen this advertisement several times, but I only realised today how weird it was. "Breakfast flavoured" milk? How do you make something breakfast flavoured? Chocolate flavoured, vanilla flavoured, strawberry flavoured, fine. But what's breakfast flavoured?

Sorry about the smaller-than-usual picture. I made an error while resizing it. Too tired.

[Top 10 Finishers...]

Another compilation I found on Youtube. The moves in this one are way more extreme, being from the independent circuit.

I've never heard of half of them, to be honest. And I think the soundtrack is retarded, but that's just me.

[Logic, or the lack of it...]

Why put a pole...there? It makes sitting at the seat next to it extremely uncomfortable. Most adults would have problems sitting there. Only kids can sit there comfortably.

When locking the door is not enough, erect a metal gate outside. But no, don't make a full gate. Leave a gap on top, so people can jump in through the gap, break into the room and spend a night there with full privacy.

If you see the logic in any of these designs, leave a comment.

[Now what?]

As I mentioned in an older entry, I bought the Samsung CLP-300 for printing notes for myself and my sister. The people at Samsung tout it as "the world's smallest colour laser printer". I'm not sure if that's true. It probably is, for now. In any case, it really is quite a feat of engineering design because it has a really small footprint.

However, their excellent design did not extend to the packaging of the toner cartridges. Here's why:

There's this little pull-tab on the front of the box. As you can see here, I've already pulled it off. Okay, I can see the toner, but how do I get it out?

Truth is, you can't. You need to rip the whole thing open, which was surprisingly easy:

I don't know why they put a pull-tab there in the first place. Maybe it's their idea of a joke.
"Hey, let's make a little opening for them here. We'll let them tear a hole big enough for them to see the toner cartridge inside, but they can't get it out. It'd be hilarious! Let's do it and record the calls to customer service support. It'd be ripping good fun!"
Idiots.

[Top 20 finishers...]

Saw this video on Youtube:

It's a compilation of the top 20 finishing moves in wrestling. Here's what they are:
  • 20 - CM Punk's Go To Sleep. Pretty cool, should be higher up on the list if you ask me. Everytime he does it, it's a nose-breaking incident waiting to happen.
  • 19 - Brock Lesnar's F5. An okay move. I don't particularly like or hate it.
  • 18 - Abyss' Black Hole Slam. I like this move. When he does this on smaller and more agile guys, he's actually able to spin them around more.
  • 17 - Kennedy's Green Bay Plunge. Silly move.
  • 16 - Rey Mysterio Jr's 619. Yes, it's a silly move too, but I never get tired of watching it.
  • 15 - Undertaker's Last Ride. He doesn't do this anymore. If he did, I think it would be only a matter of time before someone loses their tights...Not to mention getting a wedgie.
  • 14 - Randy Orton's RKO. I like this move, although it's a very simple move. He can pull it out of nowhere and you won't see it coming.
  • 13 - The Rock's Rock Bottom. Crap move. Same goes for Booker T's version. Don't get me started on The People's Elbow...
  • 12 - Jeff Hardy's Swanton Bomb. I never get tired of watching this neither.
  • 11 - AJ Styles' Spiral Tap. Honestly, I felt that this move deserved to be higher on the list. This move is sweet.
  • 10 - Shawn Michaels' Sweet Chin Music. He's been using this forever, but the fans still go apeshit over it.
  • 9 - AJ Styles' Styles Clash. Yup, AJ's the only one with two moves on the list. I don't like this move much to be honest.
  • 8 - Rob Van Dam's 5 Star Frog-Splash. For someone with RVD's talent, I thought he'd pick a more unique finisher.
  • 7 - Steve Austin's Stone Cold Stunner. Crap move. You know it's coming when he kicks the other guy.
  • 6 - John Morrison's Corkscrew Neckbreaker. I like Morrison. He has some cool moves and moves very fast for a big guy.
  • 5 - Kaz's Flux Capacitor. It's cool, but I don't think it's very smooth. By the time he attempts this move, it's usually late in the match and he's worn out.
  • 4 - Monty Brown's Pounce. This is the worst finisher on the list, hands down. I don't know how it ended up on number 4. This happens all the time on the football pitch.
  • 3 - 720 DDT. I've never seen this move until this video. It's cool and I think it's not easy to pull it off. Both guys must really be in sync.
  • 2 - C4. I've only seen this move done by this pirate character on WWE, who's name escapes me at the moment. I thought it was cool, but it was an accident waiting to happen.
  • 1 - Petey Williams' Canadian Destroyer. Deserving of the number 1 spot. I first saw this move a long time ago, when Subby introduced me to TNA's X-Division. I remember feeling kinda sick when I saw it. They call it the most devastating move in professional wrestling and I don't disagree.

[This can't be safe...]

I was waiting for a bus today when I saw a guy removing the National Day banners from the lamp posts on the road divider.

He unclipped the bottom of the banner first. At that time, I thought what he's doing was dangerous without having someone to hold the ladder steady for him, especially since the ladder was on uneven ground. You can't really see it unless you look closely, but only one of the ladder's legs was on the ground. The other one wasn't due to the uneven ground. Then I realised it wasn't too bad, because he was hugging the lamp post quite tightly so it was unlikely that the ladder would slip or anything. I did wonder what would happen if lightning struck the lamp post, though.

But when he went up to unclip the top of the banner, that's when I took the picture because I thought what he's doing now was insanely dangerous. Even if he "hugs" the lamp post now, he could still lose his balance as the ladder was no longer in between him and the lamp post. My bus arrived at this point and I didn't see him make it down the ladder.

I also noticed that the lamp post was shaking a lot while he's doing what he's doing. It's a wonder they haven't collapsed during a thunderstorm or something.

[Tremors...]

Last night during my Cybercrime lecture, I received an SMS from my sister regarding an earthquake in Indonesia and how she felt the tremors at home. She was the only one who felt it last night. My parents were home, but my Mum didn't feel anything and my Dad only thought it was weird that the water in our fish-tanks was "slooshing" around in a strange manner.

This morning, it happened again. And I slept through it.

I was woken up by my Dad bursting into my room. I can't remember what he said. When I went outside, I saw what my sister tried to describe to me last night. The water in our fish-tanks was moving in a way that wasn't normal. Once again, my Mum did not feel anything but my Dad did this time because he was seated.

How exciting. We've lived in Bukit Panjang for 20 years and this was the first time we felt tremors. I didn't feel anything, but the sight of the water movement in the fish-tanks was a sight to behold...

[If it ain't A, it must be B...]

I've never been impressed with the reporting in the local media when it came to Information Technology. At best, they report something incredibly uninteresting. Sometimes they get some facts wrong, and the rest of the time, they report absolute rubbish.

Here's what I mean:
Internet scams get more creative to bypass security features
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 September 2007 1743 hrs

SINGAPORE: Despite new security features, hackers and spammers are still finding creative, sophisticated ways (Creative, sophisticated ways. Don't forget this. This is what they claimed in their opening paragraph. Let's read on.) to cause massive problems to computer systems.

In fact, observers have noticed that the brightest minds in information technology are being recruited by organised cyber gangs.

Chee Heng Loon, VP of Asia-Pacific, Sonicwall, said: "If end-users are not hiring them, if we are not hiring them, then where did all these people disappear to? The only conclusion we can come to is that a huge organisation out there is sucking out all of the skill sets and we believe they are the guys who are behind all the spamming and phishing attacks." (What kind of bullshit reasoning is this? I mean seriously...)

Nonetheless, one can still sniff out a scam by taking cues from the use of generic greeting in a scam email or when the link and the URL in the status bar do not match.

Industry watchers said it is getting easier and cheaper for hackers to launch attacks on organisations.

First, they use an email generator, which is easily available on the Internet, to produce billions of accurate employee email addresses.

Next, a "proper and official-looking" email is drawn up to ask for one's credit card number and other personal information. (Oh, this is "creative and sophisticated"? This has been around for ages, and most people don't fall for this.)

In order to send billions of such emails worldwide, scammers need powerful servers and bandwidth.

Such illegal services are highly sought after by cyber gangs in Eastern Europe as well as in China.

These "Internet mafias" can provide powerful servers and bandwidth for as low as US$300 to US$700 per hour.

A recent European survey showed that one-third of office workers shared the same password for both work and personal access.

More alarmingly, 71 per cent said they would give up their password for a bar of chocolate. (Taken out of context, I'm sure.)
A classic example of a news article that isn't really at all "new". This article turns me off just about as much as a bag of flaming, steaming monkey crap.

[Broken seats, higher fares...]

The bus companies keep increasing the bus fares even with million-dollar turnovers every year. You'd think that they could spare some of that on bus repairs, but no.

"They" need to upgrade their ivory towers. To shoot flames at peasants that wander too near looking for berries.

If you're using Singnet and you're reading this, let me know if you can see the images on my blog properly (leave a comment).

With the proxy off, some of the images from Imageshack don't load right. With the proxy on, everything loads fine.

I'm starting to wonder if the problem is on Singnet's side or is it on my side. It could be a DNS issue, but I think I've configured everything correctly on my end.

[And furthermore...]

To add on to my previous post...Boy, sure a lot of add-ons tonight.

The Internet Google is an extremely powerful weapon. Look what it did to Stephen Sing and Odex.

And now, they actually found out what that NSF looks like. Who his girlfriend was, when they broke up, etc.

Google should be classified as a weapon of mass destruction.

[Lessons not learnt from Virginia Tech...?]

I want to add something to what I mentioned in my previous entry, about the NSF going AWOL with his rifle.

He was AWOL for 20 hours with a deadly weapon. Why wasn't there any warnings from the authorities?

Have we not learnt anything from the Virginia Tech shootings? They caught him at Cineleisure...I'd assume that he had the weapon hidden from view, otherwise he'd have been caught sooner. Even if he had only 5 rounds, he could have killed more than 5 people if he wanted to.

[Time, so little, yet so much of it...]

The topic doesn't really have anything to do with anything. It's a phrase from Angel, in the episode where he became human and screwed his brains out with Buffy. Sounds crude, but if you followed the story you'd agree that it was the thing to do when he became human, all things considered.

I thought of using it as the title for this entry because I really shouldn't be spending time on blogging right now, seeing how I'm swamped with stuff. Oh well...

I read on a local forum today morning that an NSF walked out of his camp with his assault rifle and with several live rounds. When a rumour like this starts online, it spreads like wildfire. Anyhow, the news is out, the guy's been caught. It seems that he's been missing for 20 hours! He left the camp around midnight and was caught earlier at 8pm in Orchard Road. He was going to ORD next month, too.

I wonder what's going on in his twisted little mind.

Spent an hour on the phone just now talked to a friend who's graduated. I needed her help with my HYP and the stuff she told me really cleared up a lot of issues (JF: If you're reading this, thanks heaps!). Honestly, I don't know how people get their HYPs done without help from friends. And as it turns out, most of my friends have graduated.

Live fast. Fight hard. Regret nothing. Fear less.

It's from a John Cena shirt. I think it'd be fantastic if I could live my life that way. Except I can't right now, being in constant fear of my HYP.

I'm hungry.

It doesn't get anymore random than this.
