[Bret Hart's back!] Have you ever read one of those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books while growing up? Not sure if they still have them. Don't see them around anymore. Remember how you would put your finger at the page where you made a decision? If it turned out crappy, you would go back and pick the other option? Wouldn't it be nice if we can do that in real life? ^^^ by Locksley @ 9:07 PM.

[Random bits...] Interesting? Yes. Worth $20? No. I think $10 or $15 would be more reasonable. We saw every exhibit and read all the signs next to them and it took us one hour and forty-five minutes. If you are there early, get the ticket that includes entry to the Science Centre. It's only $1 more. There's probably more things to see there. My IKEA chair is about two and a half years old now. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed. Look at how the leather has worn out. It's real leather, by the way. The chair was cheap. It only cost me $128, but still... Our leather sofa for the living room lasted about eight years before the leather went. I'm thinking of getting another chair. They have one with a mesh back and when you lean back, the back-rest goes down and the seat moves forward. That chair costs $399 and it's not even real leather. But I'm worried that the material would not last. At least for my current one, it's cheap so I don't feel too bad if I have to throw it out. ^^^ by Locksley @ 2:44 AM.

[Random bits...] Nothing has changed with my Internet plan. I upgraded from 1Mbps to 10Mbps, but the speed I'm getting right now on my old ADSL modem is only 6.5Mbps. I have two other modems, but both of them are unable to connect to Singnet. Someone from Singnet will be coming by tomorrow, hopefully it will all be sorted out soon. I did some research, seems like this is a problem on their end, something to do with not having done something to some profile settings. Will be on leave tomorrow because of this. Didn't want to take leave actually. It would be better if I were at work tomorrow. I called Citibank earlier to cancel one of my supplementary cards. As I navigated the call menu, I was told that they are experiencing high call volume and if I left my name and number, that they would call me back by 6pm the next business day. I decided to hold. After waiting for about 10 minutes, my call was picked up. The guy on the phone immediately told me about the high call volume and whether would it be okay if I left my number and that they would call me back tomorrow. I was pissed. I purposely waited on hold because I wanted to settle this issue tonight. And the first thing he asks me is if they could call me back? If I wanted them to call me back, I would have left my number in the beginning and not waited. I gave him a piece of my mind. Probably the first time I was nasty to customer service personnel. When they call me back tomorrow, I would probably be nasty again. I don't know what happened to Citibank. Their service was excellent in the past. I never had to be on hold for more than thirty seconds. Now whenever I call them, I am always on hold. And is this the way they deal with calls when there is "high call volume"? By asking for customers' contact numbers and calling them the next day? Are all the operators doing that? If so, then why is the call volume still high? This tops the WTF-experience I had with UOB, when I called to ask about my account balance while standing in front of an AXS machine and the idiot on the phone asked me he could call me back a few hours later. Would it take that long to tell me my account balance? I told that idiot no, I want to know my account balance there and then. Maybe I should have said the same to the guy from Citibank. I was at HarbourFront yesterday and I took the following pictures: I took the pictures....ON A BOAT! I'M ON A BOAT! EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME, CAUSE I'M SAILING ON A BOAT...TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT THE MOTHER-FUCKIN' BOAT! Okay, Lonely Island moment over. Anyway, there's this ship at HarbourFront which has a book-shop on it. Seems like they sail around and set up shop as and when they dock. It's a Christian ship/book-shop, so most of the books have a Christian theme. One of the titles they carried was, "The God of Sex". I'm not kidding. What was interesting was they searched us as we left the ship. I thought that that was shitty. If you don't trust us, then don't let us on your ship. Searching us as we got off was kinda insulting. But as it turns out, the search was conducted by the SPF. Everyone who got off had to go through a metal detector and the ladies had their bags searched. I wonder why. In any case, the search was done in a half-ass manner. The woman using the metal scanning wand did not even detect the keys in my pocket. Not to mention the fact that they were just Cisco personnel. Two ladies and one guy. No guns, no batons, no nothing. If something were to go down, they wouldn't last five seconds. Had a rather unpleasant experience on the bus yesterday. As I was getting onto the bus, this disgusting auntie actually physically pushed me out of the way. First time someone actually pushed me out of the way. Of course, I could have stood my ground and pushed her back and have her on her ass in two seconds flat. But how would that look? So I swallowed my anger and hoped that she die. The next stop, this uncle got on. He saw a seat in the last row of the bus, and proceeded to rub his butt against everyone's crotch on his way to said seat. And when another seat opened up, like the unglam uncle that he is, he switched. And look at the gross, unglam way he's sitting. I hope he dies too. My company has corporate passes for several tourist attractions in Singapore (the irony is not lost on me). I booked the zoo pass and went on Saturday. It sucked because it rained half the time, but I managed to get some decent videos. Check out this one, feeding time for the white tigers: I can't remember the last time I went to the zoo. It was a long time ago and I was probably just a kid. I remember looking at the crocodiles and there was this insanely huge croc just floating around and I recalled wondering if it was real or just a prop. In any case, I was pretty scared because, seriously, it was a fuckin' big croc. I got to relive my nightmare, sort of: ^^^ by Locksley @ 11:25 PM.

[Still down...] I was on leave today (Friday). Had to get some errands done. Went to the doctor for my annual check-up. The package I buy every year includes blood and urine tests. It's not easy to draw blood from my arms. For some reason, my veins are all not very visible. It's easier to draw the blood from around my knuckle area. That's where my doctor drew from on the first attempt. But my vein collapsed and not enough blood was drawn. The next vein he found was on my other hand, near the wrist, at the side. Not a typical position to draw blood from. It was also not easy to position my hand on the table properly, so he actually called his wife over (they are both doctors in the same clinic). He held my hand down while his wife drew the blood. I know this was for safety, but it really wasn't necessary. It hurts, but it's not that painful that I would jerk my hand or arm away. I thought it was epic. It required two experienced doctors to draw a bit of blood from me. Met up with some friends for dinner earlier. One of them is currently working in Japan and came back for a short holiday. While waiting for him, I bought a new watch: I've been wanting to get another watch for a while. This is my fourth watch. The other three have smaller faces and I've been told that I should wear watches with bigger faces. Maybe I can pawn the other three off on my Dad and buy a whole bunch of new watches with bigger faces. Anyway, this watch was a steal...Only $68. It's a Casio, but I don't care. They make really nice silver-bracelet-type watches now. And I just realised that it has a very interesting feature. There is no "clicking" sound coming from it. You know how there is a clicking sound whenever the second-hand moves? This watch doesn't make that noise. Very clever design. ^^^ by Locksley @ 1:26 AM.

[Sights and sounds on public transport...] Saw this woman on the bus yesterday... She was holding the tissue to her nose the entire time. She wasn't sniffing, there weren't any bad smells on the bus, so I can't think of the rational reason for her to be doing this. The only conclusions I can draw are: 1) She's a Germophobe. 2) She thinks the tissue paper is some sort of biological and/or chemical filter. 3) She's crazy. In all cases, I have the same advice for her. Stay home. On a different bus ride, heard a kid talking to his father in Chinese. His father said very loudly that he didn't understand Chinese and wanted his kid to speak to him only in English. I'm no fan of the Chinese language myself. I took Higher Chinese when I was in secondary school and hated almost every minute of it. On some level, I think Higher Chinese actually dragged down the results for all my other subjects (because I had to go for HCL lessons in another secondary school twice a week which really drained me). There's been a lot of discussions about how the Chinese language was taught wrongly in schools. I don't want to get into that. What I believe is that, in the long run, English is probably the more useful and important language. Let's face it, English is the language of commerce, science, and technology. People always talk about how important it would be to speak Chinese due to the rise of China. I say this - the whole world is speaking English, instead of having the whole world learn Chinese, perhaps the people in China should learn English. Having said that, I still think that it is important to be able to, at the very least, speak conversational Chinese. My ability in this area has been going south in recent years, being unable sometimes to convey what I mean to my parents and asking my sister for translations for certain English words or expressions into Chinese. Of course, for me, the impact is perhaps not that great. After all, I am no longer in school. But for the kid, he looks to be still in primary school. His father is probably creating the wrong mindset in his son - that Chinese is not important at all. While he, as a father, may have failed in his mastery of the Chinese language, his son should be given a fair chance and not be discouraged from doing so. Some people are not fit to be parents. On the same bus journey, I overheard another conversation between a red-neck type mother and her young son. I didn't catch everything, but it went along the lines of the son wanting to buy something which the mother did not approve of, and she chided him loudly on the bus, saying things along the lines of having found him in a dustbin, that he can go and work as a coolie (?) for money if he wanted to buy the thing he wanted, etc etc. What does chiding your child in public accomplish? And for that matter, the coolie comparison? Com'on...Join us in the 21st century. How would the child feel? Probably not very happy with the public humiliation. Wouldn't it be better to speak with him and explain to him nicely in private? And telling a kid that he or she was found in a dustbin can psychologically scar them for life. Who wants to be disposed in a dustbin? Such people should not be allowed to reproduce. ^^^ by Locksley @ 10:44 AM.
