[The problem with hot water...]

I don't know how it works in your household, but this is how it works in mine.

We have a hot water flask. One of those things which is plugged in permanently to the power-point. You pour tap water in, it boils the water and keeps the water warm scalding hot.

For some reason, both my parents like to keep the water level in the flask full, or at least close to full. For some reason, which I have yet to discover after 30 year of living with them, we must never be out of hot water. My mother would even fill the water flask at night before going to sleep, to make sure there is a full flask of hot water throughout the night.

We also have a jug of normal, room-temperature water. When the water in this runs low, it is topped up by the water in the hot water flask. No one drinks the water immediately as it is insanely hot and let's face it, so is Singapore. We wait for the water to cool down before drinking it. Personally, I like using ice in my cup to cool it down even faster.

So here's what I don't understand: Why do we keep a huge reserve of scalding hot water on standby? Why don't we boil the water only when we need to top-up the jug of room-temperature water? The only time we need hot water is when my father makes a cup of coffee. Surely, keeping such a huge reserve of hot water at all times is unnecessary and a waste of energy.

I don't think I'm going to keep this practice when I move to my own place. Doesn't make sense.

[Common sense isn't...]

I was at a moon-cake fair earlier and saw something that made me feel terribly disgusted.

At such events, the vendors usually provide samples. The usual practice is for the vendors to give you a small piece of the moon-cake on a toothpick if you ask for a sample.

One of the vendors at the fair decided to try something different. They put a whole piece of moon-cake next to a stock of small plastic spoons. If you want a sample, you grab a spoon, dig out a portion, and discard the spoon.

I was tasting one such sample when I saw the woman after me use the same spoon to dig for a portion three times. She put the spoon into her mouth, and then used the same spoon to get another sample, twice.

What is wrong with these people? Don't they have any common sense? I felt so disgusted upon seeing that. I can only imagine how many other people before me did that and I may have some of their saliva in my mouth.

[The end of an era...]

I got my very first mobile phone at 18 and every phone I've owned since had been a Nokia. Back then, Nokia phones were very common and popular. Their phones had an intuitive UI and was very easy to use. Even when you change to a newer Nokia, you will be able to get used to the new phone very quickly.

It is safe to say that Nokia has seen better days. I needed a new phone, and decided to join the Android camp and bought the HTC One X. After fiddling with it since Saturday night, I am done and fully migrated over. Some thoughts about the change...

The good. Internet surfing is much better. I can finally abuse my 12GB of bundled data by download files even when I am not at home. I bought the phone without contract, so I could stay on my existing plan with the data bundle. My calendar and notes are always synced with Google and Evernote, so I don't need to worry about my life getting into a mess should I lose my phone or if the phone dies on me.

The bad. Nokia phones have fantastic GPS navigation. Google Maps' Navigation feature is not available in Singapore, so I have lost the GPS function. I know about Brut, and I know there are other apps for GPS navigation. But the point is, it already works beautifully out of the box for Nokia phones. Why is Google being so difficult?

Nokia phones have a fantastic way of organising the phone's alert profiles. Android is lacking severely in this aspect. I won't go into the details, but I am rather miffed by the alert options in Android.

I haven't really done anything else for the past two days. I devoted my time to exploring and figuring out the OS, which is new to me. Now life can finally get back to normal.

[Diplomat's the new Executive...]

I received an invitation to apply for some credit cards from DBS recently. Included with the materials they sent was this application form:

I understand why they're asking for job titles. Probably for marketing purposes. What I don't understand is why did they include "Diplomat" in the job title. How many applicants would tick this box? Is diplomat a common career these days? I don't think so.

[Would you like a cup of coffee? Really?]

I think it's a pretty universal thing to offer guests a cup of coffee when they visit. I don't know what's the exact reason behind this, but something about this doesn't seem right.

Personally, coffee makes me wanna poop. I'm not the only one. The "coffee makes you poop" theme has been played on television and a simple search on Google will tell you that many people are affected. A lot of people cannot go to the bathroom in the mornings before they've had their cup of coffee.

So what does it mean, really, when we offer someone a cup of coffee? Are we being hospitable hosts, or are we really setting them up for a "toilet prank" later on? Imagine getting the urge right after they leave and when they are stuck in traffic.

So, how about that cup of coffee now?
