[Prison Break - For real...]

News broke out at around 8:30pm that the leader of JI in Singapore has escaped. I was busy going through the job ads for the day and filling out IDA's really annoying application form and I only found out about the escape a while ago.

Not too long ago, an NSF went AWOL with his rifle and live ammo. Now this.

To be honest, I'm not all that surprised that these events occurred. I think that when it's unthinkable that something would happen, all the more reason it would because we wouldn't be prepared for it. Remember 9/11? The day the world changed. And it happened because no one thought that there would be people crazy enough to hijack planes and smash them into buildings.

No one thought an NSF would be crazy enough to go AWOL with a rifle and live ammo. No one thought someone could escape from the detention centre. Yet it happened. Why? Because no one thought it would happen and thus the safeguards were probably sloppy.

[Premium distilled water...]

I saw a commercial for "premium" distilled water on TV a few minutes ago. How can there be "premium" distilled water?

Think about it.

[Fantasies...]

"...the thing that makes a fantasy great is the possibility that it might come true. And, when you lose that possibility...it just kinda...sucks." --Catherine Willows, CSI, Season 6 Episode 1, "Bodies in Motion".

[I'd be smiling too...]

According to my sister, James on Survivor said during an interview that he's going to play a more social game this time, and that he's doing "a whole lot of smiling a whole lot earlier".

Mmmmmm....Well, if you watch the show, you would know that there's something going on between James and Parvati.

If I was banging Parvati...

...I'd be smiling too.

If I was banging her on TV for the whole world to see, I'd smile even more.

[Life's short...]

I've just been told that a school-mate from SoC has passed away. I didn't know her personally, but I recognise her face. And no, that's not weird. That's how it is in University. You have some close friends, you have some hi-bye friends and the rest, you don't know their names but recognise their faces.

Of course, it's always sad when someone passes away...Not to trivialise anyone's pain, but I think it's even sadder when a young person passes away. I'm pretty sure she's younger than me. Probably 23 or 24. So much of life she's yet to experience.

[A man with a plan...]

I used to be kinda panicky because I thought I would have found a job by now. I still haven't found a job, but I'm a lot less panicky. I have a plan, and I'm going to stick with it.

Also, I learnt a bit more about the recruitment process of larger companies from a cousin during one of the CNY visits. My advice to those still studying: Look for a job early. These things may take longer than you think.

The TV has been giving us problems for the past few days. As far as I know, the first time it happened was during the CNY countdown when my Mum was watching the TV. I don't want to go into the details of the problem (because it's boring). Last night, it happened again and my Dad and I got down to business and we isolated the problem to the cable box. Calling Starhub's tech support was not really helpful...I think their tech support is designed for people who know absolutely nothing about technology. I missed the beginning and the end of the Manchester derby.

Rather than asking for a guy to come down to replace the cable box, I went online and looked into "upgrading" to the digital cable box. We must be one of the last few people in Singapore still using the analog cable box. As it turns out, it would cost us only an additional $2 a month, and we get an additional 8 channels without changing or paying more for our subscription plans. Truth be told, the 8 channels are mostly crap, but it's still 8 more channels.

We went to get the box exchanged and I spent the afternoon putting everything back together. I don't know why we didn't do this earlier...It's just $2 more and the new features (like the programme guide) are really useful. The images are clearer as well, not because it's digital (from the box to the TV is still analog) but because we could choose to use the (old) RF connection or the RCA connection. The RCA connection was much clearer and we decided to use that instead. However, this meant that we had to use the video-in at the front of the TV which I thought looked like shit. But my Dad didn't mind, so what the hell.

[Chinese New Year]

What I don't like about CNY:
  1. CNY songs. They all suck.
  2. Talking to relatives I haven't seen in a year. We don't make any efforts to contact each other during the year, so what makes you think I would be interested in hearing your life story?
  3. I wonder about the CNY song composers. Is that something they set out to be? When they were young and teachers asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up, did they say they wanted to compose CNY songs? Or were they just so bad at composing regular songs that they settled for CNY songs?
  4. To all the kay-poh sohs: I'm single, get over it.
  5. I hate CNY songs. Always have, always will.
  6. Parents trying to enforce the rule that we have to be vegetarians on the first day of CNY. We eat meat all year round, one day won't change anything.
  7. The artificially-happy artistes on the countdown on TV last night. What the hell are you guys so happy about? For that matter, why are anyone happy at all during CNY? What's the big deal? It's just...a day. Nothing changes. If your life sucked, it will continue to suck.
  8. Did I mention how much I hate CNY songs?

KFC took out an ad in the papers today. At the bottom of the ad was a line telling people to order by Feb 5th to "satisfy your cravings".

Today's the 7th.

I got a calendar from the LFS when I bought some filter foam a while back. It's printed by Qian Hu and it's a monthly-type calendar and there's a saying on every month. My sister noticed this month's saying...

Huh?

[Uncertainty...]

I'm starting to panic. Just a little bit. Why? Because I thought I'd be working by now.

I look through the ads online everyday, as well as the recruit section in the papers on Saturdays. I can't even find one online ad to respond to a day. I'm either not qualified or not interested. When I was studying, the topic once came up about the material we were studying (in my major) and a joke was made that we were being trained to be middle to upper management without really being trained for entry-positions. It was funny then. Not so funny now.

My current plan is to keep going through the online ads every day and the print ads every Saturday. If that doesn't work, there's a career fair in NUS on the 21st and 22nd. I think the chances of finding a job there is much higher, seeing how they should be expecting fresh graduates. So I don't need to worry too much about not being qualified, just a matter of whether or not am I interested in the job. I think I'd have a slight advantage over the others as well, seeing how most of the people there should still be in their final semester while I have already graduated and can start work immediately.

I'm also considering a job away from the IT industry. I already have very little interest in the technical aspects of IT, so this might be something worth considering. It's not unheard of, for people with academic backgrounds in IT to end up doing something else.

I'm actually somewhat interested in this particular job...It's a Government job and the starting pay is fantastic. It seems like a job I could do well, and sounds interesting enough (on paper, anyway). What I didn't like about it was that there are three rotating shifts and you have to wear a uniform at work. And I'm not sure about the career advancement prospects of that job. It should be good, but I'm not sure. Not to mention if I apply for and get that job, I'd be effectively ending my association with IT. Although I seem to have lost interest in IT, I'm not sure if I should drop it completely. Like YQ said, it's a good skill, and we should try to hang on to it.

If only this was a game. I would save right here and try one path, and reload the game if things didn't work out.

What to do, what to do?
