[Why 96%?]

Observe...A ream of A4-sized paper.

Turn it around, and this is what you see:

96% brightness. What is that supposed to mean? And why 96%? Why not 95%? Why not 100%?

What process did they go through that made them arrive at 96%?

The lift landings at BPP have LCD screens installed, showing promotion events, advertisements, etc. One of the things they show, are stock indices. Why? Who cares? By the time you show the indices, they are probably already out-dated and I can't imagine them being useful to anybody. Not to mention that today's a Saturday and the stock markets are closed (aren't they?).

Saw this guy at the bus-stop outside BPP. I would never be caught dead wearing those bermudas. I don't know whether is it because I'm getting older now and my tastes have changed, or is it that what passes for fashionable these days is simply shit.

[Good and bad stress...]

There is an interesting article in this month's Readers' Digest that I thought was worth sharing.

It's about good and bad stress. I thought it was interesting because the indicators of "good" stress seems to describe my current situation, while the indicators of "bad" stress described the time I worked before I started studying in NUS very accurately.

Blogger shrinks the images. If you can't read the article, you need to click on the pictures to see the full-sized images. The second and third image should be fine, though. I've always said that if you can't sleep properly at night, you need to quit and find another job. If worrying about your job is keeping you up, you need to find something else.

Oh, and Mark Lee is on the cover of next month's Readers' Digest. WTF.

[Out of my mind...]

I've taken public transport all my life, but recently, I seem to have more and more gripes about the system. I think it's probably because in the past, I don't always take buses or trains during rush hour. In fact, I try to arrange my schedule so that I can avoid the rush hour commute. Now that I've started working, I can't do that anymore.

The thing is, you have to put up with a lot of crap on public transport. Especially so during the rush hour. I find that when I'm on buses or trains during rush hour, small things piss me off.

Take, for example, this woman.

She was on next to me on the bus yesterday evening, going to Orchard Road. There was a jam, but it wasn't too bad. Traffic was slow but still moving. She kept looking at her watch, then craning her neck to get a better view of what's going on ahead and going...

"Zhe."

Annoyed the crap out of me.

In something unrelated, when I got off the bus, this guy in front of me has a packet of tissue stuck half-way outside his pocket. How glam. Anyway, this is one of the problems of wearing formal trousers. Guys, might want to take note. Not a problem if you wear jeans. But formal trousers are loose-er than jeans and if you keep tissues in your back pocket, they tend to slide up when you sit down.

[48 years...]

I guess everyone should know by now - Singapore's 48-year wait for a Olympic medal has ended. I actually stayed back in office just to listen to the play-by-play of the match. It was somewhat hilarious...None of my colleagues knew that TV Mobile's soundtrack was available over-the-air. When they realised they could tune in, all of them scrambled to their cubicles to tune in. Some of them can't even remember how to tune their radios.

As I excited as I am about Singapore winning a medal at the Olympics, I don't think that it's a "clean" victory. My heart is telling me to be happy, while my brain is telling me that we did not earn the medal - we bought it.

That said, they say that everyone remembers where they were when they learnt of JFK's assassination. I say, we should all remember where we were when the 48-year wait ended.

[PC woes and everything else in between...]

I usually eat breakfast in front of my computer before heading off to work. On Wednesday morning, I turned my rig on but the monitor was on standby. Long story short, display card was seemingly dead, monitor was fine.

I took half day's leave yesterday and went down to the distributor in AMK to get it sorted out. It's the second time I'm there. The first time was two weeks after I bought the card. Upon testing, the display card worked fine.

I was pretty perplexed as I wasn't looking forward to an extended troubleshooting session, but when I replaced the card into my rig, it booted up without any problems. All systems go.

Phew.

My graduation photos have been filed away, and I had a chance to look through my old photos. From kindergarten to my University graduation. I've changed so much over the years. Some of the people in the same photo as me have left this world. Some of them, I cannot even remember their names.

[Of big bellies and little wheels....]

Today's Sunday Times offered two interesting topics for discussion.

Firstly, there's a report about how pregnant women were being fired from their jobs as some SMEs choose to take the easy way out and not pay their expecting employees maternity benefits. I am not at all surprised at this. My experience with SMEs gives me the impression that the management of these companies are only interested in one thing - money. The bottom-line. They are not interested in anything else, and would rather save money in the short term than to make more money in the long term.

While it's easy to fire expecting employees to get out of paying them maternity benefits, have they considered how much would it cost to hire someone new and how much it would cost before this new hire would be as skilled on the job as their previous employee? This is especially so in certain job scopes that require a lot of human-to-human contact, connections, and the like.

While this can be an interesting topic, going forward, for the MIW to tackle, we cannot forget another aspect of this situation - male employees being fired due to RT/ICT commitments. Don't say it doesn't happen, don't say it's against the law. It happens. Anyone who's spent some time looking through the employment laws of Singapore will be able to tell that the laws favours employers, perhaps exceedingly so.

Why is that, I wonder?

Luckily for me, these are issues I would never have to deal with in my current workplace.

Secondly, the issue of parents using strollers versus the general public was raised.

I've always wondered about the wisdom of parents who bring their strollers out with them on public transport, into crowded streets, or into places that basically make those strollers a nuisance. Once, I encountered a stroller when I was browsing at a pasar malam. Com'on...The stalls are lined up behind a small pavement. The stroller itself takes up 75% of the pavement. What the hell were the parents thinking, pushing that damn stroller down the already-packed pavement?

Strollers should be banned, and specifically allowed in places that do not make them a nuisance. Like parks or something. Don't expect people on a crowded street to give way to your damn stroller. We owe you nothing.
