[Free tickets...]

A few posts ago, I wrote about how I was bitten by some insects while at a cinema. I wrote them an email and attached pictures of the bites.

They got back to me recently:

I exchanged the complimentary tickets for:

Now all I need is to be well by tomorrow...

My sore throat is almost totally gone. I no longer feel as weak as before. With the end of every episode of sore throat, comes an episode of yellow-green phlegm and coughing fits. I am okay with the phlegm and coughing fits. What worries me is that I feel kinda warm...Feverish even. That was in the afternoon. I feel much better now.

I need to be okay by tomorrow. I have tickets for Inception!

[Sore throat...]

I get sore throat somewhat easily. It has always been this way, since I was a kid.

Back when I was younger, sore throats are not that big a deal. I could still function normally and I usually do not even see a doctor.

These days, whenever I get a sore throat, it feels like I've been struck down by Ebola or something. I am tired and can't really concentrate on anything. I will usually go see a doctor for some antibiotics, unlike in the past where I just let it clear up by itself.

This feeling blows.

[Unpleasant cab drivers...]

I took a cab three times today, and twice I had an unpleasant experience.

The first time was when I took a cab from my office to our other office. It was a Merc cab so I thought that was pretty cool. At first. After I got on, I realised the cab driver has issues.

There's no real way to describe his behaviour. You need to see it for yourself. He talked dirt about unreasonable passengers, about how passengers gave vague directions and not know where they are going, and how a group of a certain race of people were stingy and didn't know who was going to foot the bill. The ironic thing is that he made a wrong turn on the way to my destination (but I corrected him in time and we got back onto the right track). There is no excuse for not knowing where my destination was. It's a landmark of sorts. Everyone knows where it is. And that happened right after he complained about passengers asking to go to "condo in Jurong".

What really freaked me out was as the journey continued, he got more agitated and started taking his eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel. At one point, he turned his head and looked at me while we were still going.

I'm just glad to still be alive.

The next unpleasant experience was when I took a cab back home. It was simple...The expressway is 500 metres away. Get on it, then get on the BKE and I'm home. I've taken a cab home from this place many times and this is the first time the driver didn't know this most-direct route. He took me on a wild goose chase and was extremely unfriendly. I didn't even say anything when he took the longer route and he acts as if I've offended him. Good thing it only cost $2 extra.

I tried that infamous Japanese stall at Far East. I don't know what all the fuss is about. Their food isn't really that good. Nor is it really that cheap. I was told that Mr Grumpy wasn't there tonight, so I didn't catch any of his antics. I will not think of going back there again.

[Renovations...]

My neighbours in the unit directly below mine are having some renovations done.

A lot of "concrete dust" is flying out from their windows and a lot of it ended up in our unit on the first day of their renovation. Since then, we kept the windows closed to prevent the dust from flying in.

What I'm upset about is how they did not inform us that they were going to be renovating their place. Other neighbours have dropped flyers apologising in advance and letting us know how long the renovations would take. Not this family.

And also, what kind of shit contractors did they get? If they poured water on whatever they are drilling, there wouldn't be so much dust.

If I run into them in the lift, I'm going to let them how irritating their renovation is for the rest of us.

[Are you smarter?]

My parents love watching the Taiwan version of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?". Personally, I dislike basically all Taiwanese variety shows. No offense to anyone who enjoys watching them, but I hate the sound effects (which they insert for no apparent reason), how the girls act cute and how their voices sound.

So in this rip-off (they also did "Don't Forget the Lyrics!"), the kids all have pseudo-names. I don't watch the show, but I know there's a "Leaf" and a "Little Water-Melon".

Why isn't there anyone called "Toilet Paper"? Seriously, they might as well be called that.

All the forced-cuteness and sound effects are driving me crazy. And I don't even watch it. Just having it on in the background is making me psycho.

[Points to ponder...]

I really can't decide whether to laugh, cry, or be angry at the stuff I read.

Take this, for example...

How can I "benefit" when I am paying more to get to the same places I've been traveling to? Can someone explain this to me? How can someone who's never taken public transport know about our "choices"?

Then there's this...

Somehow, the idea that Marina Barrage "did help to ease floods" isn't very believable when we had the worst flood in 25 years.

[Stumped...]

I can't figure out what's with the tweets. As far as I can tell, they sometimes work but most of the time they don't. I tried a different widget from Twitter and even the preview on their own site couldn't work.

I reduced the number of tweets shown to five (from ten). I wonder if it would make a difference.

[Cursed for me...]

Today at work, we went out for lunch. We usually eat either at the food-court next door or the canteen downstairs. Today, we went to a food-court at the same place where I got bitten on Saturday (see previous post).

I think that place is cursed for me.

When I was eating, I felt a drop of water fall onto my right sleeve. I figured it was probably from a leaky air-con, so I didn't think much of it. After lunch, we walked back to the car-park and I smelt something very bad. I asked my colleagues and two of them smelt it as well.

I couldn't figure out what it was. In any case, I didn't smell it anymore once we were in the car.

When I reached my office, I smelt it again. This time, I thought it might be something on me. I looked at my shoes but didn't see anything. That was when I noticed my sleeve.

When water gets onto your clothes, after drying, it doesn't leave anything behind. The drop of water that got on me left behind a brown mark. I took a whiff and nearly lost consciousness.

That was where the bad smell was coming from. Smells like sewage, to be honest. I tried washing it off with hand soap, to no avail. After washing, I could still smell it on me. It was that lethal.

I decided that I should go home and change. I told my supervisor, and he suggested that I pack up my stuff and work from home for the rest of the day instead, lest I travel to and fro. I took his suggestion and worked from home for the rest of the day. Which was great, because with less distractions, I actually got more done at home.

I was pretty miffed about the whole thing. Although I did get to get off work early. I've sent two emails - one to the shopping centre and another to the food-court operator. Let's see if they respond. The cinema (see previous post) has yet to reply...I'll give it a week or two before I reveal where it happened.

I switched from M1 to SingTel recently. So far, their performance has been disappointing. To start with, their plans are rather prehistoric - no bundled MMS and no per-second billing.

After being on their network for about a month, I noticed two very strange things which I never encountered when I was on M1 (for about 10 years).

First, multi-part messages get delayed. Suppose someone sent me a long SMS which is broken up into different messages for sending. The first two messages will always reach me very quickly. But I have to wait for the last message to come in. They usually come in within the hour, but not immediately. I don't know why.

Second, they can't find me for some reason. Someone would call me and get the message that I cannot be reached. All this time, my phone was switched on and reception is perfect. SingTel sends out an alert message for "missed calls" of such nature, and only then am I alerted to this problem. It happened a few days ago when my sister (M1) tried calling me. It happened again today when a colleague tried calling me (Starhub). I have never encountered such things before when I was on M1.

On the whole, I am rather disappointed with SingTel. Maybe they feel that because they are the biggest player in town, they can afford to be sloppy? I don't know. But the minute M1 offers a plan that meets my requirements, I am jumping back over to them.

A friend of mine is working on an online event organiser that looks promising. I don't think it is open to public yet, but this might be something you want to bookmark for the future.

If you've read this far, please do me a favour. Let me know via comments if my tweets are showing up on the right. I haven't been seeing them for a while. I tried fixing them this afternoon and it worked for a while before dying again. Oh, and let me know your ISP. My ISP has problems displaying certain sites (not kidding...how shitty is that?) so knowing whether you can see the tweets and what ISP you are on will help me fix the problem. Thanks.

[Bitten...]

I was at a certain cinema on Saturday and during the movie, I pulled up the leg of my jeans for a short while. About 10 minutes, at most? And look what happened:

For some reason, my phone's camera is unable to capture just how red they are. They are actually a lot redder than the pictures.

I had a total of eight insect bites. I didn't notice them on Sat, only on Sunday morning when I woke up. They looked like small mosquito bites then. They were insanely itchy and scratching them resulted in the red bumps in the pictures. I've been bitten by the same insect before in the past, but never so many bites at one go. They are not painful, just itchy.

I'm going to write an email to the cinema with the pictures attached and see what they have to say about it.
