Saw this ad on a website...

Who the hell is going to fall for this? So your phone rings and your breasts get bigger? What if I'm a guy? Do I get an erection, then?

Who comes up with this shit?

Saw this book today...

It seems that the British were the ones who invented baseball. Whatever. I thought the title and cover was funny. Especially how you can see the underwear of the second guy from the left. Hahaha!

My horoscope for today...

So accurate, it's scary.

[I hate...]

...Taiwanese variety shows.

My parents watch them a lot. I hate them. To be fair, I've never watched a single episode. But I hate how all the girls have high, squeaky voices. How all the girls have the same persona - act cute. How they use stupid, dumb-blonde sound effects every other second. How they think they're good at English but pronounce everything wrongly.

All the girls are dumb blondes and all the guys are douche-bags.

[Down...]

Had a bad case of sore throat today. Took medical leave and stayed home. Not before I went to the office to collect my notebook and hand over some documents to my supervisor first.

I've never really been much affected by sore throats. I get them often, and most of the time, it's just an annoyance when I swallow. Doesn't affect me much and I could go on with my daily activities. But I find that in recent years, I'm more affected by it than before. I feel weak, tired, and would often get a bit of a runny nose when I had a sore throat.

I actually thought it would be a good opportunity to get some work done in the comfort of my own home. I thought I could finally catch up on some of the things that I'm lagging behind in. However, after finishing the first task, I took a nap and was out for four hours. Usually I would be worried that I can't fall asleep later at night, but it's not a problem today as the good doctor gave me some cough syrup...

[Random bits...]

There seems to be some problem with Singnet and Blogger. The "Create Post" page wouldn't load right without the proxy on. With the proxy on, the page loads right, but only on IE and not on Firefox. Annoying.

In my early experience when switching from Starhub to Singnet, Singnet always had problems displaying some pages if you don't turn proxy on. However, with the proxy on, speeds are limited and you can only have a maximum of five connections (if I remember correctly).

The page display problem (without using proxy) seems to have gotten better over time, but now it's back with a vengeance on Blogger. I'm using IE6 to compose this post now, instead of Firefox. Hope they figure this one out soon. There were problems using Microsoft Update without proxy too.

Male or female? Guess.

It's actually quite obvious. Male. What is it with guys these days? Why are so many of them carrying tote bags? It's so unnatural.

My "room upgrade" plan is finally complete. It started with getting a new bed so that I could maximise the space I had and store my army stuff under my bed. Then I had to get rid of my aquarium so I could get a L-shaped table for my room, because my old computer table did not have space for me to get a new monitor. After getting the monitor, I upgraded my rig. I really planned to stop at getting a new monitor, but decided to get a rig anyway since my display card fried and I was running out of hard disk space. After getting a new rig, I realised that my current UPS was unable to support the higher power demands, so I had to get a new UPS as well.

I got a new UPS yesterday morning from Convergent, and it's finally done. My new setup:

My new rig. Simple casing, but it's really very well-designed. I really like the easy-to-clean fan filter. My previous Cooler-Master failed miserably in this aspect.

The new UPS:

My previous UPS had an output of only 300W. This is definitely not enough for the higher-end DIY systems today. So I switched to this model instead, with an output of 660W. It came with one of the battery connectors disconnected. End-users were supposed to connect the black wire to the positive terminal. However, when I opened up the battery compartment, the black wire was already connected. It was the red wire that was disconnected. It took me a while to figure it out. When I connected the leads, a white spark "flew out" from the connectors. In the end, I connected the leads using a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

That's it. All done. Now I'm ready to take over the world! Hahaha!

Wigan 0 - 5 Manchester United.

Who needs Ronaldo? I think Man United plays more like a team now that he's gone. It used to be "get the ball to Ronaldo". Now everyone plays their part. Players like Nani will get a chance to shine. He has scored two goals from free-kicks recently. May he become the true free-kick specialist, rather than Ronaldo who really only scores from free-kicks 10-15% of the time to my estimation.

I loaded the highlights clip on DailyMotion and saw this next to the video:

I think they either need to redefine what they mean by "related", or work on their search algorithm in this area.

[Bits and pieces...]

I'm finally done with my new computer. I don't consider a new hardware upgrade or OS install "done" until I do one round of maintenance. I have a maintenance routine, which includes going to Microsoft Update, running Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag, etc. Whenever I buy a new hard disk, I run Scandisk in full mode as soon as I can. Need to check if there are any bad sectors on the new disk. Last thing I want is to fill it up with data and realise there are bad sectors, which is basically hard disk cancer.

A few more things I need to do, though. I've sorted out the audio problem, which is great because that means I don't need to get a pair of new speakers. I do, however, need to get a new UPS. I have a rough idea of what I want to get. Then, I need to figure out what I'm going to do with my old rig and my old scanner. New motherboards finally phased out the parallel port, so my scanner's gone.

Have a slight headache as I type this. I haven't been getting enough sleep for a while. Whenever I don't get enough sleep over a period of time, I get headaches.

I'm still concerned about what's going to happen at work. I don't know what's happening next or where I'd end up, and this makes me very nervous.

[New rig!]

I'm almost done with my new rig. I bought everything on Friday afternoon, and was then kept pretty busy with setting it up since then. I took leave for tomorrow, intending to go back to work (and cancel my leave) if I managed to be done with it in time, but looks like I won't be.

I bought my first rig back in 1996. It was an Intel Pentium 120Mhz, with a 1.2GB hard disk. Mind you, back then, the fastest processor was 133Mhz and most hard disks are 500MB-800MB. Ever since then, I've never bought another Intel processor.

For my new rig, I decided to get an Intel because the Core i7 simply has no real competition - yet. Also, this was the first rig I'm building where budget is not that much of a factor. I ended up with a Core i7 950, 3*1GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 RAM, GeForce GTX 275, 2*1.5TB hard disks, 700W PSU, and a new casing.

The casing and PSU were the only items I did not do any research on. For the casing, I thought it would be a good idea to go down and look at them first-hand. I wanted to change a casing because it was insanely troublesome cleaning the dust filters on my current CoolerMaster. The dust filters do their job very well, but in order to clean them, I need to remove my DVD drives, detach the front panel, then painstakingly remove each and every individual piece of sponge (they are the dust filters). The sponge was thin and it was only a matter of time before I tore them...Not to mention the fact that sponge will break down over time.

Unfortunately, the only casing that met my requirements was a Lian Li. I wasn't considering Lian Li at all because of the higher price they command. But it was the only one that met my easy-to-clean-dust-filters requirement. The Lian Li I ended up with cost almost twice the amount of my second-choice CoolerMaster (which had the same dust filter problem).

I paid the guys from the shop to assemble everything for me. When I got home, I went through everything to make sure they did it correctly and realised that they used the not-so-good power connector from the PSU to the motherboard. There were two possible connectors to use, and they went with the weaker-powered one. Good thing I spotted that. Wish I thought of taking pictures...Then I would have something to show for this entry.

Other than a few hiccups with the way the motherboard worked with SATA drives, it was smooth-sailing when it came to software installation. I'm in the middle of mirroring all my data now, which is taking forever. There are, however, a few issues that need resolving...

First, my UPS. The output of this UPS is only 300W. It's meant for typical home systems, and not one like the one I've built. Everything's fine when the power is on. But I tried turning off the power and the UPS could not power my new rig via its batteries. I may need to get a new UPS. I'm still considering it. A UPS that matched my new 700W PSU would cost an absolute bomb.

Next, there is some issue with the audio. Previously, both the bass and treble were at reasonable levels. I used the same sound card and installed the same drivers, but the bass is almost non-existant now. I can't figure out why. This is not my strong suit...And searching on Google didn't help. I might have to get a new pair of speakers that comes with bass/treble adjustment dials...Which I don't mind because I've been thinking about it anyway. My current speakers are the only things that were still beige. I saw this 2.1 speaker system that I liked, but there's one issue. The sub-woofer projects like a regular speaker, instead of downwards. Due to the placement of my rig, this means the bass would be projected into the back of my monitor. That can't be good.

This was supposed to be the last piece of the puzzle for my room upgrade plan. But now it looks like I have a few more items that I may need to get.

[Decided...For now...]

I've decided. I'm going to get the Core i7 950, 3GB of DDR3-1600, and GeForce GTX275. Together with a motherboard, hard disks, DVD writers, casing and PSU. Total damage should be about $2,500 to $2,700.

I just hope my UPS can support all this. I don't want to have to get a higher-end UPS...I don't know where to get the damn conversion cables so that I can use a regular three-pin plug on them.
