[Download Managers...]

I remember getting online for the first time back in late 1996. I was using a 33.6 kbps dial-up modem. Download Managers (DM) were a necessity back then, seeing how easy it was to get disconnected.

Fast forward a few years later, when broadband came into the picture. Download speeds increased, and having a DM didn't seem that important anymore. Most files downloaded very fast and there's really no need to have to use a DM.

Fast forward to today. I've now moved to fibre broadband, a far cry from the 33.6 kbps modem. If someone traveled back in time to 1996 and told the 1996-me the speeds we would be enjoying today, 1996-me would not have believed him.

We've come a long way. Now, the limiting factor is no longer our Internet speeds, but the speeds on the server side. Many servers limit the file transfer speeds, so most of us never get to "max out" or fully utilize the speed we paid for.

Enter DM.

I've started using a DM again. Not to fix broken downloads, but to have single downloads broken up into parts and downloading the parts separately. I can download the same file much faster, and that really rocks.

A lot of technology fade away after some time. They either became irrelevant or got overtaken. You don't usually find a piece of technology that became relevant and useful again after it has somewhat faded away.
