[Never go away...]

Some names never go away.

For example, when we first moved to this neighbourhood, there was nothing here. We are living on the very first plot of land where they started building from when Bukit Panjang got started as a new town. We did not have a proper bus terminal. It was just something along the street, like what they have at Ghim Moh. There is a coffee-shop there. What did we call it? "Number 5 Bus Terminal". Why? Because there was a SBS bus numbered 5 which starts from there.

If memory serves, bus number 5 starts from Bukit Panjang and ends at Geylang. This bus is no longer here. Ironically, I take it almost everyday in the mornings now to go to work. It now plies from Bukit Merah to Pasir Ris. I think it's been about fifteen years since it stopped operating here. Possibly more.

But the name lives on.

Because the town was new with nothing much here at the time, urban planning was simple. The way they placed things in this very first plot of land was to draw a line right down the middle and mirror everything. On the other side, there wasn't a bus terminal, but a huge drain. There is a coffee-shop there as well. We called it the "Big Drain".

It was raining earlier, but the water level is not too high. I think this is the central drain for Bukit Panjang. On days with heavy rain, you can almost go white-water rafting in this drain.
