[Nature's designs...]

I've always been fascinated by how things turn out in nature. Everything seems to have been designed for a specific purpose and reason. Nothing is there...Just because. There's always a reason as to why a plant or an animal has a particular trait. Whether is it for purposes of survival, reproduction, etc.

Which is why I don't understand...Why are insects attracted to light?

It's "flying ant" season again. Lots of them flying around the lights at night. They get attracted to the light, fly around it, eventually entering the fixture cover. They can't get out, so they die in there under the intense heat of the light. I removed the fixture cover a few months ago and cleaned out all the dead bodies. As I look up now, I can see lots more, and one still alive, crawling around in there. It's only a matter of time before it dies and joins those who got there before it.

Why did nature design these attracted-to-lights insects this way? They are attracted to something that means certain death. I've never tried it, but if I lit a candle and turned off all the lights, maybe the insects will be attracted by that as well (moth to a flame?). If they get close enough, they will get burnt alive.

Was nature taking a nap when these insects were made?
