[Elevation X...]
One of the most exciting gimmick matches right now would certainly be the TLC in the WWE, and the Ultimate X in TNA. Both types of matches were not for bulky, big-muscled wrestlers with no wrestling ability. Wrestlers often go all out and pull off insane moves in these types of matches.
So when TNA introduced Elevation X, I was excited. I wondered what tricks they had up their sleeves. The first ever Elevation X pitted AJ Styles against Rhino. Basically, it's a scaffolding match, with two planks placed high above the ring and whoever falls off, loses.
You know it's gonna be bad when fans start praying before the match.
Fear/uncertainty on Rhino's face? Don't see that very often.
AJ Styles starting the climb.
AJ Styles on top of the scaffolding. At this point, a "please-don't-die" chant started.
AJ Styles in the middle. You can see how high the structure was.
This fan can't look...
...and these are plain worried. Fans' faces don't lie.
Rhino climbing up. Look at the size of the planks relative to Rhino. Not a lot of room to move about.
Worried fans.
Rhino trying to climb back onto the top.
More concerned fans...
AJ Styles in trouble...
Even the normally bloodthirsty male fans were worried.
I didn't see this coming...Styles hiding from Rhino.
Finally, Styles falling off the top.
That marks the end of the first-ever (and hopefully last) Elevation X in TNA.
Credit to both men for putting up a decent show. These matches were usually punch-kick affairs due to the lack of space on top, but Styles and Rhino managed to pull off some, albeit not as spectacular, moves on top. And credit to Styles for climbing all over, under and through the scaffolding like an insane monkey.
That said, I hope I never see another match like this, ever again.
This was definitely the most dangerous match I have ever seen. Even more than Hell in a Cell when the wrestlers took bumps off the top of the Cell. Because in HIC, bumps were planned and the Cell was sometimes rigged. The chances of something unexpected happening was low (although Foley did crash through the Cell unplanned in the third HIC). For Elevation X, the chances of things going wrong was far greater due to the lack of space on the top of the scaffolding.
It was dangerous, fans were genuinely worried, and there wasn't room for much creativity on top of the scaffolding. Too much risk, too little returns. It had Owen Hart tragedy written all over it.
Never again. Please.
