[What the f....]

I was done with my work for the day, and was about to go catch the Chelsea vs Liverpool match when something caught my eye.

I took out one of my guppies this afternoon because she looked like she was about to give birth, or was in the process of doing so. Until now, there are no fries, only lots of fish droppings in the birthing tank.

Anyway, that's not the point...I've been wrong before. What shocked me was that one side of my guppy turned black.

Female guppy.
This is the right side, everything's fine. The picture below is shot from the front of the guppy, and you can see half of it is black.

The right side. Yikes!

Anyone who's ever kept guppies before would know that this is not normal. I've never encountered this in my 2 years of keeping/rearing guppies. Anyone have experience with this and know what's wrong? Leave a comment. Thanks.

EDIT: Gallas scored a goal and Chelsea's leading 1-0 now. He scored the goal while I was typing, and I managed to stumble out to the living room (I don't have cable TV in my room) just in time to catch the replay. Poor Liverpool defending I must say...

I've never seen anything like it.. Maybe it's bruised? I don't know.

I have a lot of guppies, but the weirdest thing I've seen is a few V shaped ones. Birth defects, I guess. But none turning black on me.
Yeah, my Dad also thought it was bruised.

I have come across some guppies with a "V" in this spine. Very common. In the long run, it'd be better to cull them so that they don't spread the defect to the next generation. I culled a lot of them when I started out, and I had zero birth defects for a long time, until recently when I added some new guppies. Guess the "defective" gene is back...
