[One man down...]

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup a little while ago, losing 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield. In truth, I felt that both teams did not play well, although Liverpool was the better team. It was a match United did not deserve to win. Their passing was sloppy and it didn't "flow" very well.

Alan Smith
Alan Smith suffered a pretty horrific injury during the match. I read on Soccernet just before writing this and it was reported that he dislocated his ankle and broke his leg.

When I was watching the match, I didn't know what had happened. All I saw was him trying to block Riise's free-kick and he doubled over and never got up. The next scene I remember was some of his team-mates holding him by his arms and helping him sit down. Many of them were gesturing wildly for the stretcher. At this point, all we saw was his back. Martin Tyler (who was doing commentary, without Andy Gray, thank heavens) didn't know what happened neither, but he did comment on Van Nistelrooy, who took a look at Smith and moved away because he couldn't stand the sight of whatever he saw.

We then saw a replay of what happened. It was clear from the replay that something happened to Smith's left leg, but it wasn't very clear as the angle was wrong and Smith blocked his own leg from view as he went down.

Next shot we had of Smith was him lying on his back. I thought at that time maybe he broke his nose or something, but his face was clean. My sister remarked right then that his lips were white/grey. Was he going into shock? I don't know. The medics secured his leg and he was carried off to a standing ovation. A nice gesture from the Liverpool fans. On his way out, Smith actually reached out to grab an oxygen mask.

I'm pretty shaken up by the whole thing (and I saw Sid breaking his leg in WCW, which was many times more graphic). Alan Smith is currently my favourite United player. He hasn't done well in recent times, after being switched to midfield. But when he first arrived, he was an instant hero, scoring 4 goals in 8 matches, many of which came late and secured the 3 points for United.

Here's to a speedy recovery for Alan Smith.

I hope he recover soon too. Its a shame he will miss the world cup though.
